FHIR Discussion pages are used to capture ongoing discussion about the content of the HL7 FHIR specification. They can be edited by anyone - HL7 member or not. Feedback and ideas contributed on these pages will be used to make FHIR a better standard.

A FHIR discussion wiki page will exist for each of the major topic web-pages in the FHIR specification, including for each resource. (If you encounter a FHIR specification web-page where the link doesn't exist yet, feel free to create it using the instructions below.) However, additional discussion pages may also be created to deal with issues that span specification pages or don't seem to fit well with a specific specification web-page wiki discussion. If you choose to create one of these pages, be sure to create links to it from any of the web-page FHIR Discussion Pages where the topic is particularly relevant.

Creating a FHIR Discussion Page

The following instructions presume that you have a wiki account and have logged in. If not, click on the "log in / create account" link in the top-right of this page.

FHIR Spec-specific pages

To create a FHIR Discussion Page for an existing FHIR specification web-page, go to the desired page in the specification and click on the Wiki for this Page link. If the desired page already exists, you'll see content and a link back to this general page (presuming the creator followed these instructions). Edit the page as desired to reflect your new issue.

If the page doesn't already exist, you'll see an instruction saying "There is currently no text in this page". Click on the link labelled Edit this page. Then follow the below.

Custom pages

To create a new topic page that's not specific to a particular specification page, type the name for the topic in the search window on the left of the wiki and press Go. The topic name should follow this pattern FHIR your topic name Issues Page. Ideally the topic name should be broad enough that the page will be appropriate for discussion of more than a single issue over the lifetime of the FHIR project. If the desired page already exists, you'll see content and a link back to this general page (presuming the creator followed these instructions). Edit the page as desired to reflect your new issue.

If the page doesn't already exist, you'll see a search page, and part way down it will be a link saying Create the page "[your page name]" on this wiki!. Click on that link. Then follow the below.

General page creation instructions

The first thing to do on a new page is to include a reference to the FHIR Discussion Page Template and a little bit of additional boiler plate text. (If someone created a FHIR discussion page and forgot to do this, feel free to edit the page and do it for them :>) Copy and paste the text below:

{{FHIR Discussion Page}}

<!--[[Category:Active FHIR Discussion]]-->

If adding an active discussion, remove the comment markers (the funny angle-bracket and dash things) from in front of the 'active' category so that the topic will appear in the active list.

Then add a heading for your issue or discussion topic and edit away, making sure to save the page when you're done. If your page is a custom issues page, you may want to add links from any resource or general wiki discussion pages for which those types of issues will be relevant. If you think it will be a topic of importance and broad general interest, you can add a link directly off the FHIR page as well.

Using FHIR discussion pages

Some good practices:

  • Group the discussion for each issue under its own heading.
  • Where useful, divide the discussion into sub-headings such as "background", "references", "considerations".
  • As issues get resolved, the discussion and background information can be moved to the "discussion" tab to keep the issues page reasonably clean.
  • Pages with all issues resolved should have the '#' symbol placed back in front of the "Category:Active FHIR Discussion" tag
  • Pages with remaining open issues should have the '#' symbol removed
  • If responding to existing comments, use sub-bullets and prefix with your initials
  • If possible, limit postings of e-mail threads and Skype chats to the "discussion" tab for the page rather than the main page and instead summarize the content using wiki mark-up. This greatly helps readability.
  • Keep the discussion friendly :>
