Issue
The final rule requires support for outbound laboratory results from an EHR to the ambulatory provider. Unless the LIS is a subset of the EHR rather than a separate, integrated system, it is unclear how the EHR knows how to forward the lab results to the provider as the EHR may not have received the orders directly. The LIS knows (in either configuration), but the EHR may not. Consequently, the LIS needs to communicate enough information on the transaction to enable the EHR to forward when needed.
The ordering provider does not contain enough information whether it was ordered as an ambulatory provider and if so what system should receive this information.
It is unclear whether resolving this is even in the scope of this IG as it focused on Ambulatory Lab to Ambulatory Provider.

- 28 Aug - We do not believe that this LRI IG can address this question as the configurations of LIS-EHR-Ambulatory Provider systems is dependent on a number of business arrangements, the use cases of which are not in scope of this IG. Business functionality should not be part of the LRI IG and should be managed through other mechanisms. Ken McCaslin, David Burgess
