Binary XML ITS

(from email dated mid 2006)

The Effecient XML Interchange WG [1] was only recently formed...they just had their 1st face-2-face meeting a few weeks ago (HL7 does not currently have any representation on the group...if anyone wants to represent HL7, please let me know...hint, hint...if people are interested in this then step up and represent us).

They are scheduled to release the 1st draft of their 1st deliverable in May...that deliverable being a white paper like document "providing the analysis of the performance measurements and of the Test Suite" to be used in the development of the binary encoding itself...although, knowing how things go I don't expect that for a few months after that.

The next deliverable, the 1st draft of the binary encoding itself, is scheduled for Sept...we'll see if they hit that date. IMHO, the only hope they have of hitting that date is to do very little design work and basically just adopt one of the 9 binary encodings that have been submitted as possible contenders.

The WG is chartered thru Oct 2007, but which time they are supposed to be done...again, we'll see if they can hit that date. Past experience suggests "no".
