- Discussion:
- How to grow US core
- Ed states that he would like to see us identify a small set of data elements that we define complete with all of the attributes, and then encourage ONC, NIH and other federal funding agencies to require the inclusion of those data elements in their EHR or related databases in the form that we define with the units and other attributes. The push would be to put them in the database itself rather than mapping.
- Brett: The idea of a small set of common elements that we push in various venues make sense. Ed: The other thing is that this needs to be an open process. Johnathan: Will be a number of things that not everybody is implementing. There will also be things that we'd like everybody to do but they aren't required by regulation. A starter set will help though.
- Ed: We'd set up some criteria for the selection of the data elements, and we should work very carefully with CIMI. These would be the critical data elements that we think are reasonable to put in that first set. Brett: The only part I'm missing is why we're not looking at the common clinical data set from 2015. Ed: We should look at that and then maybe put more in. Johnathan: We need to think about how the elements are used. Ed: We should lock the data elements into the FHIR resources.
- Discussion over ramifications of that. Not every US requirements is going to make it into the Core resource. In FHIR, there may be pushback on some elements.
- Group reviews slides that Brett put together. Slide 1 - Path to US Core. Discussion over the pilot step and the publishing step as precursors to accepting entry into US Core. Steps: Declare candidacy, publish implementation guide, pilot, request formal US Realm review, submit STU update or ballot.
- Several candidates have already gone through the first steps of the process that we can pilot the process with.
- Discussion over pilot process and who to engage.
- Within FHIR there are a few logical data elements that can be included. Brett asks Ed to bring back ideas from other factions within HL7 that he's been conversing with.
