Talk:Focal Class
During reconciliation of the HDF ballot the issue came up regarding the term Focal Class. As I understand it, at one point a decision was made that all state transitions, as they tied to trigger events, would occur on Acts, not Roles or Entities (I'll ignore Managed Participation). The status Code on Roles and Entities would tie to business process, not trigger events. Thus, as an example, a nullification of a Patient role would be communicated on a registration act rather than the role itself.
Do people agree with this, or did I understand something that wasn't correct?
It seems this term is used in two ways:
- The entry point to an RMIM
- The class(s) with state changes related to the trigger event.
These are two different things and we should have different terms for them.
Resolution
It is possible to have a trigger event that deals with direct state transitions on Role and Entity, though this does not occur when dealing with "Registry" messages (whose state transitions are always on the Registration Act).
Recommendation is to use two terms:
- Entry Point Class refers to classes that are marked as entry points.
- Focal Class(es) refers to the classes undergoing state transition as part of a trigger event.

- Update HDF to use these definitions
