Standard/IG: Implementation Guide Artifact ID, Name: PID-13 – Phone Number - Home and PID-14 – Phone Number – Business

Issue

NOTE: this is a low priority for LRI since dealing with optional elements. Will be implementing this in PH profiles however.

There are two ways to message home and work numbers in the 251 ORU stucture. This forces receiver to have to support multiple options.

PID-13 – Phone Number - Home and PID-14 – Phone Number – Business can be used to list home and work number, Alternatively you could use

PID.13 and/or PID.14 and use the Telcommunications use codes to indicate work, home, other. ( see list of HL7 Table 0201 - Telecommunication Use Code below) In addition PID-13 – Phone Number - Home and PID-14 – Phone Number – Business state the the base standard that "The first sequence is considered the primary number (for backward compatibility). If the primary number is not sent, then a repeat delimiter is sent in the first sequence." Which is not a testable In the context of conformance testing since "primary number" is undefined here. In version 2.7.1 of the HL7 standard PID-13 – Phone Number - Home and PID-14 – Phone Number – have been deprecated and replaced by PID-40 Patient Telecommunication Information (XTN). Below is the definition for PID.40 and the v2.7.1 XTN datatyp for your reference

  • v271 HL7 Table 0201 - Telecommunication Use Code

  • 3.4.2.40 PID-40 Patient Telecommunication Information (XTN) 02289

"... Definition: This field contains the patient's personal telecommunication contact information. This field replaces PID-13 – Phone Number - Home and PID-14 – Phone Number – Business with the intention that the components of the XTN data type be used to identify phone usage (Telecommunication use code) and type of equipment (telecommunication equipment type). Jointly, these components will describe the nature of the telecommunication data contained in this field and removes the sequenced-based assumptions in PID-13 and PID-14. ..."

  • HL7 Component Table - XTN – Extended Telecommunication Number

1 W Telephone Number

2 O Telecommunication Use Code
