A Local Information Model (LIM) is a particular form of HL7 static model that are introduced to provide explicit support for Templates and LIMS are a little different from other static models in this regard. In particular, LIMs will be able to be incomplete models, and have different entry points. This type of model is defined in the HDF.

However LIMs are not the same as templates. CIMs may also be used as templates, but CIMs must always be complete models. The terms “Template” and “LIM” are often used synonymously, but this may not be true in all contexts, and the terms should be used carefully throughout HL7 V3 standards development and implementation.
