*The FHIR track for the Cologne WGM was discussed at length.  Grahame and Lloyd were not happy with proposed changes.  They assumed that they were dictated not proposed but we explained that was not the case.  Also, they were concerned about being able to make changes in the timeframe allotted. They did not like the courses for FHIR for Developers and FHIR for Architects being renamed to Intro to FHIR Part 2 and combined into one course.  We discussed that even if kept separate they should be named based on what you achieve in taking the class, not based on what audience they are for.  It was noted that their are many possible audiences and different audiences may benefit from the same classes.  Grahame has also expressed a concern with the idea that people might consider themselves experts after one week of tutorials and Lloyd expressed a concern that prerequisites are often not respected.  Our group discussed the need for a track for people to take for the week and that prereqs were important.  John Ritter is concerned that their be education for everyone.  Caroline noted the importance of clear objectives and competancies in the descriptions. Susan noted that clear laddering in which students are able to achieve higher level competencies over time, as well as competencies on more difficult topics over time. She also explained how for prerequisites she even sometimes had tests. We discussed the idea of partnering subject matter experts with those in education to help improve educational offerings. Virginia noted that one would not necessarily assume they are an expert from taking a sequence of classes at a WGM or set of webinars and compared it to someone graduating with a bachelor's degree is still a beginner.  Diego said we can cover levels 1-3 in our training where there are really levels 1 to 10.

Diego summarized our ask of the tracks as follows:
 +
*0. These ideas could apply to any product family, I am writing about FHIR because it's hot now and will be hotter in the future: we will have more material and more interest and more diverse audiences for FHIR as this and next year advance.
 +
*1. IDEAS FOR NOW: Our priority is to get this done fast for May 2018 WGM, but we want to set the direction and settle a few issues or begin to settle them:
 +
*  a) There should be a "week pathway" for someone new to FHIR but willing to do a whole week of tutorials.
 +
*  b) For this you need to classify the tutorials in three or four groups
 +
*-- something you need to do on Monday/Tuesday
 +
*-- something you need to do on Wednesday
 +
*-- something you need to do on Thursday
 +
*We named these "Basic" "Intermediate" and "Advanced" and we know that maybe this is not based on the tutorials’ “canonical classification” according to some education taxonomy or even according to what Advanced mean for the FMG. But we need to give these three levels a name. It can also be I, II and III and there should be a pre-requisite relationship between them, maybe not a formal one, but as "if you know your Basic FHIR you do not need to take the Mon/Tue tutorials, just go ahead with Wednesday”
 +
*So we are not really constraining the FHIR group on what to teach or who will teach it. We need a coherent way of presenting this to the prospect participants and some kind of understandable logic if someone takes tutorials the whole week.
 +
*Sadhana noted that she had a call to discuss the FHIR course track on Friday and invited WG members to join.
 +
*Susan recommended that we develop curriculum using the concept of backwards learning - focusing on outcomes first.  Virginia noted we had a prior workgroup conference call devoted to it the topic of backwards learning (posted recording on wiki)

*Sadhana noted her priorities were Cologne calendar, 2018 calendar, and then 2019 calendar.

Review of prior minutes: deferred

Explanation to Workgroup to Advisory Council Change

  • Virginia explained how the board has asked that the group evolve into an advisory council, a role the workgroup has pretty much already been playing.

Ed to Go Renewal

  • Sadhana explained that the Ed to Go contract costs more than its benefit and recommended that we cancel it. As an aside, Caroline noted that her company actually offers a similar product. The workgroup agreed with canceling Ed to Go. (Virginia motioned, seconded by Diego, unanimously passed).

Education Calendar

  • The FHIR track for the Cologne WGM was discussed at length.
