Need clarification on comments re MessengerRNAIdentifier Definition (rows 34)

Current Definition

DEFINITION: The unique identification of a gene transcript in a specified context.

EXAMPLE(S): An identifier in ENSEMBL or RefSeq

OTHER NAME(S):

NOTE(S):

Ballot Comment

assuming changing to a cDNA transcript (probably based on question 19, row 31)

Current Definition

DEFINITION: A unique symbol that establishes the identity of the transcript. Version numbers must be used, if available as part of the standard.

EXAMPLE(S): <SEE ANSWER TO QUESTION 20>

OTHER NAME(S):

NOTE(S):

Current Disposition

Pending Input From Submitter

Proposed Disposition Comment

Need clarification on the meaning of the comment. Note that referencing another class name directly or indirectly in the definition of the class you are defining is permitted by BRIDG conventions (i.e. using the term mRNA as a synonym for MessengerRNA - another class - is allowed) - is that why the suggested replacement of "mRNA" with "transcript"? Need to run this by the LSDAM SMEs for agreement but versioning comment makes sense.

Outstanding Question

  • Does the definition of MessengerRNA need to change, and if so, to what?
  • (Answer should clarify any reference to question 20.)

Responses

Lauren Becnel: mRNA is only produced from protein-coding genes. Not all genes are protein coding. The definition should be amended slightly to clarify.

Q from WENDY: How is the definition best amended to clarify the meaning?
