Schematron is a (XML based) language to make assertions about patterns found in XML instances. In the context of HL7 version 3 Schematron definitions are commonly used as an additional validation layer (e.g. for Templates) beyond the XML schema for the HL7 v3 interaction or the CDA R2 XMl schema.
