   1. Definition: A field is a string of characters. Fields for use within HL7 segments are defined by HL7. A comprehensive data dictionary of all HL7 fields is provided in Appendix A.
   2. Refer to section 2.10.5, "Protocol for interpreting repeating segments or segment groups in an update Message" for information on updating records in a database.
   3. Version control rules regarding fields can be found in section 2.8, "Version compatibility definition".
   4. Local extension rules regarding fields can be found in section 2.11, "Local Extension".
