The OID for NEMSIS, the organization as registrar, is 2.16.840.1.113883.17.3

There are no guidelines for how to structure an OID network, so we'll go with some principles:

  1. We won't just assign random numbers; we'll build a taxonomy. This will make it easier to manage construction and to maintain.
  2. For the primary nodes of the taxonomy, we'll reflect the HL7 node assignments (5 & 10). Normally I'd hesitate to do that sort of alignment, but
    1. The default is random anyway, so there's no real cost. The only risk is that we set an expectation and fail to meet it.
    2. There's not much to align, so that expectation is not unrealistic.
    3. If HL7 changes, we can't help that, but
    4. NEMSIS will stay consistent internally whatever else may happen.
  3. For subsequent nodes, we'll assign numbers serially to keep it easy. Random assignment might be more methodologically pure, but harder to do well.

We'll create three sub-nodes:

  • 2.16.840.1.113883.17.3.5 for the NEMSIS terminology system
  • 2.16.840.1.113883.17.3.11.x for value sets
