HL7 Mission Statement
HL7 creates practical standards for the exchange, management and integration of electronic healthcare information through the collaboration of an international volunteer community of healthcare subject matter experts and information specialists. HL7 promotes the use of such standards within and among healthcare organizations to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of healthcare delivery.
HL7’s Goals
- Promote the use of HL7 standards world-wide.
- Educate the healthcare industry and the general public concerning the benefits of healthcare information standardization.
- Publicize existing and emerging healthcare information standards and the business case for adopting such standards.
- Stimulate, encourage and facilitate healthcare industry stakeholder organizations to develop healthcare information standards in their area of expertise through participation in HL7 without requiring knowledge of information science.
- Collaborate with other standards development organizations, in both the healthcare and information infrastructure domains.
- Collaborate with organizations implementing standards to insure that HL7 standards meet real-world requirements, and that appropriate standards development efforts are initiated by HL7 to meet emergent requirements.
HL7’s Activities
- Develop the methodology, tools, training, documentation and guides to support these goals.
- Develop and publish American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved and informative standards and implementation guides in the healthcare information domain on a timely basis, promoting their adoption by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- Encourage the use of HL7 standards world-wide through the creation of international affiliates and the internationalization of HL7 standards.
