Graphic Specifications for Labeling

Proposal: Restrict images associated with SPL to 96 DPI to ensure uniform and predictable rendering in downstream uses of SPL.

Countered with

requirements: min/max size & clarity; under screen and print conditions.

Background from FDA:

  • small size internal / NLM pdfs
  • in 2005 received bad images (size).
  • Most current users have learned; however, new user groups will experience same problems.

Test procedure … print test docs on regular (good quality) office paper. Print is finally what its about. 96 dpi line graphics OK ½ to 2/3 paper width. Greyscale; colour

Discussion Points

Technical arguments as to why DPI is not the sole, or even the most important, factor in achieving the stated objective.

What we want is dpi and size – its really size that matters.
