The term "Message" in HL7 is ambiguous and refers to one of the following:
- A message-based Interaction between a sending and a receiving system
- A Composite Message Type, the combination of static models that defines the content of an interaction.
- A Message Type, a single static model definition
- In a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA): an interaction between a service and its consumer
