Revision as of 14:27, 29 September 2010

  • Any additional suggestions for travellers are posted here: for example -
    • WikiTravel page about Greater Boston, with lots of practical information (e.g. getting there, traveling around)

Unless otherwise noted, all sites are in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Boston is just south across the Charles River and is easily accessible via public transporation.

The HL7 hotel and meeting location is:
Hyatt Regency Cambridge
575 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA 02139-4896

Transportation

Vehicle parking is challenging. Driving in Cambridge or Boston is foolish unless you know both where you're going and the intricacies of the roadways: avoid it!

The public transportation system will get you virtually anywhere you need to go. Subways and buses cover most areas of Cambridge and Boston. The subway lines are referred to by their colors: Red Line, Green Line, Blue Line, Orange Line. The Red Line is the primary subway line serving Cambridge. The Green Line has two stops in Cambridge: Museum and Lechmere.

MBTA is the abbreviation for Massachusetts Bay Transportation System, the public transportation system. It's referred to as the MBTA or just as "the T".

Most of the places you'll visit in Cambridge are near one of the named "squares": Harvard Square, Central Square, Kendall Square, Lechmere, Porter Square, Inman Square. Most squares are served by both a subway and multiple bus lines. The closest "square" is noted in the Location column of most of the below items.

Virtually all the items noted below are within a five minute walk of one of the Cambridge "squares". The exception is the Hyatt Regency Hotel, site of the HL7 Working Group Meeting, which is a 15 minute walk down Brookline St to Central Square.

History

Cambridge was founded in 1630. The Cambridge and Boston areas played important roles in the American Revolution. The area was very active in the abolitionist movement in the mid 1800s and in the anti-war movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

Cambridge consists of 10 square miles and 90,000 people. The children in the public schools speak 27 different native languages. Cambridge is also home to Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and several other colleges and universities.
