<!-- Define the full scope of coverage for the IG.  **(NOT the project - Do NOT copy from the PSS)**  The scope must be clearly delineated such that it does not overlap with any other existing or expected HL7 Int'l-maintained IG.  The scope will be used to govern "what is the set of potential applications to consider when evaluating what elements are 'core' – i.e. in the 80%".  Essentially, set the boundaries that would determine whether new content brought to HL7 should fall within the scope of your IG or somewhere else.  This should be 1 paragraph max.

US Realm public health guidance for long term care facilities (LTCF) to report healthcare-associated infection data to the CDC NHSN for both single-patient and population-summary. Builds on US Core and supplements Healthcare Associated Infections (hospital-specific reporting). Scope is limited to protocols and forms developed by NHSN for HAI LTCF reporting.

Scope should consider numerous aspects of breadth of scope, including:

* Subject: Human vs. non-human vs. non-patient (e.g. lab bench medicine)

* Disciplines: Environmental Health, Palliative, Respiratory, Psychology, Maternity, Clinical Research

* Delivery environment (Community, Geriatric, Home care, Emergency, Inpatient, Intensive, Neonatal, Pediatric, Primary)

* Locale: Country, region

Maintenance Plan

CDC NHSN will provide ongoing support of this implementation guide.

Short Description

Long term care facility (LTCF) healthcare-associated infection (HAI) reporting to CDC National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) to track infections and prevention process measures in a systematic way, which allows identification of problems and care improvement.

Long Description

This implementation guide (IG) specifies standards for electronic submission of Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) reports to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This IG contains a library of FHIR profiles for electronic submission of HAI reports to the NHSN. This IG specifies a FHIR Questionnaire-based approach. This approach takes advantage of the FHIR Questionnaire resource that has been designed as an organized collection of questions intended to solicit information from individuals involved in the healthcare domain. This closely mirrors the actual NHSN forms. As reports are modified and new report types are defined, CDC and Health Level Seven (HL7) will develop and publish additional constraints.

Involved parties

This implementation guide has been developed by CDC NHSN in consulation with Point Click Care, NASL, and Matrix Care to support electronic submission of HAI data to the National Healthcare Safety Network.
